  72. Installation of binary package

  74.     0)  Extract files from archive. You need lharc utility. We assume
  75.         \tools\hterm is a directory for hterm. Of cource it can be elsewhere.

  81.     1)  Execute install.bat with install directory. The directory must
  82.         appear in PATH. We assume \tools\bin is a binary directory.
  83.         install.bat asks some questions to you, then it copies selected
  84.         files to \tools\bin.

  88.         There are some useful files in etc directory which are used on
  89.         host system. Inspect carefully, then install them on your host.

  91.         If you want to use mouse, install it before using hterm.

  94. Compilation of source package

  109.         configuration options, this program produces;

  115.         You can reconfirm configuration options by 'hterm -?'.

  132. Invocation of hterm
  133.  
  134.     1) If you are using IBM-PC, set type of your video card to 
  135.        an environment variable. e.g.,
  136.  
  137.             C> CGA=1       (CGA)
  138.             C> set EGA=1   (EGA, default)
  139.             C> set VGA=1   (VGA)
  140.  
  141.         You need EGA or VGA to display Japanese.
  142.  
  143.     2) If you intend to use mouse, install mouse device driver. No device 
  144.        driver is required for serial ports.
  145.  
  146.     3) type just 'hterm'. 'hterm -?' will displays command line options.
  147.  
  148.        If you use IBM PC + DOS J4.0/V + VGA, 'hterm -B' (BIOS mode) allows 
  149.        you to use Japanese Environment of DOS J4.0/V.   (CAUTION! not tested)
  150.  
  151.        If you use IBM PC without DOS J4.0/V, 'hterm -f' (Soft Font mode) allows
  152.        you to display Japanese Characters.
  153.        See manual for detail.

  155.        IF you use windows3.0, hterm runs within fancy window. Since install.bat
  156.        program has copyed hterm.pif file with hterm.exe, 'hterm' will make
  157.        window for hterm. Note that according to my experience, soft font mode
  158.        and ICO Screen Saver can't be used within window. Maybe I missed 
  159.        settings of windows.

  178. Termination of hterm
  179.  
  180.     Type STOP key on PC9801/PC98XA.
  181.     Type ALT-F10 on IBM-PC/AX/J3100.

  184. Notes
  185.      Please take attention for using of set-up file built by older
  186.     version of hterm. In such case hterm displays warning message.
  187.  
  188.      If you are using IBM-PC, service software hemacs.exe is useful
  189.     to examine a file in Japanese. hemacs.exe can be used as 'more' or
  190.     'emacs'.
  191.  
  192.      Koichi Mori's MSKK is a Japanese front end processor which is 
  193.     designed to convert roma-ji to Japanese character on hterm and hemacs. 
  194.      Since MSKK is under construction, currently only roma-ji to kana 
  195.     conversion is supported.
  196.      MSKK is not configured in hterm in binary package. If you want to try
  197.     MSKK, run compile.bat to rebuilt hterm with MSKK. I strongly desire
  198.     someone finish Mori's work by writing kana to kanji conversion part.
  199.      Another way to input Japanese on your PC is MOKE. MOKE is a vi like 
  200.     Japanese editor with kana kanji conversion facility. 
  201.     Free MOKE1.1 is available from terminator.cc.umich.edu through anonymous
  202.     FTP.
  203.  
  204.      I recommend to use Nemacs (Nihongo GNU emacs) and WNN system for
  205.     another editing tool. WNN is available from distribution package 
  206.     of X window system release 4.
  207.  
  208.      JUNET is a network system which has lots of active news groups in 
  209.     Japan. News groups are called 'fj.*.*' eg. fj.comp.music. fj is 
  210.     available from NNTP server at tansei.cc.u-tokyo.ac.jp.
  211.     Stanford and CMU also serve fj. We have good news reader 'gnus.el' 
  212.     used with Nemacs. Of course it treats Japanese very well. You can 
  213.     obtain gnus from Free Software Foundation.
  214.     Please try and enjoy fj!
